Picture a hot summer night in Toowoomba

You are comfortably snuggling in your bed when suddenly, the AC stopped working. You might not immediately notice if your air conditioner malfunctions; but when you then it means a night’s sleep gone.

Air conditioning emergencies can be very frustrating, more so when it happens on a bad timing. However, being irate or fretting over wouldn’t solve the problem. It will only lead to more discomfort when you wouldn’t try to fix the problem immediately.

How do you solve one?

Check if the filter is clogged.

In most cases, an air conditioning unit would malfunction when the filter is clogged.  This is the reason we regularly remind our clients to schedule a regular maintenance of their AC units in Toowoomba.

Why?

Accumulated dirt on the filter will make it difficult for the system to release cool air. To solve this problem, you’ll have to remove the filter and have it cleaned. It is also great to have spare filters at home so you can change the soiled filter at once. Changing the filter should solve this problem. If the malfunction persists then the issue is not on the filter.

It’s a bit of a hassle, right?

So if you haven’t had an AC check for the past months, schedule one, today.

Have the breakers checked

A circuit breaker is used for electrical safety purposes. During a sudden power surge, the circuit breaker of your air conditioner will automatically shut down. It helps to prevent further electrical emergencies such as an electrical fire.

If your regularly maintained air conditioner suddenly stopped working, check the circuit breaker. After a few minutes of being shut down, you can have it back on. Although, you have to make sure to do it but once. If the circuit breaker is the cause of the air conditioning emergency, it should work at once when you turn the breaker on. If it doesn’t work the first time, then there is a different problem causing this.

Identify visible problems

If the circuit breaker is not the problem, then call an HVAC technician at once. It will also help to provide them with some information over the phone. That way, they can have the necessary tools ready before responding.

What necessary information should you tell your HVAC contractor?

You have to identify visible problems with your AC unit. You should be able to identify the following visible problems:

  • A water leak anywhere in the unit
  • The exterior pipes have ice buildup
  • Burnt wirings or weird sounds

If you observed anything among these visible problems, you should have it reported to your HVAC technician. Tell them as well what procedures you have taken so far.

Prepare your home for an AC repair

The hardest part of an air conditioning emergency is waiting for the AC to be fixed. An air conditioning emergency may occur in the middle of the night or during a hot afternoon. These bad timings can be very frustrating and uncomfortable.

You can minimize the heat by doing the following:

  • Prepare some ice-cold drinks for the household
  • Run your ceiling fan
  • Shade the windows so the sunlight wouldn’t pass through
  • Stay near a desk, box or floor fan
  • Run a dehumidifier if you have one
